Viola da Gamba – Strings / Saiten

Aquila Corde Armoniche

Why should I choose beef gut?

The use of beef gut as alternative to lamb gut dates back to the first half of the last century.

Beef gut allow a high level of standardization of produced strings that we only offer smooth and varnished.

This kind of material meets the needs of all who are looking mainly for reliability, certainty, great durabilty, limitate alteration due to climatic changes, and tuning resistance even in case of high atmospheric humidity. On the other hand, they are not suggested for those who aim mainly to the historicity and quality of sound.

Why should I choose unsplit lamb gut?

This type of material is suggested o those who wish to use strings that are strictly made according to the historical procedure and that give the maximum in terms of acoustic performance. Even if these strings are not varnished, we noticed that the use of whole gut, i.e. not cut into strips, still offer a discrete resistance to climatic changes.

Pardessus strings in beef gut

Smooth gut strings with varnished surface The varnish we used does not come as casualty but as the result of a careful selection to ensure perfect compatibility with the elasticity of the gut, a perfect contact with the hairs of your bow , maximum protection to mechanical wear, to crease and stability to humidity changes. These strings have a varnished surface in the range of diameters from .38 mm to 1.70 mm. Starting from a diameter of 1.90 mm, the strings are simply oiled. Starting from a diameter of 2.00 mm the standard length will be 180 cm only.

Choose which strings to install

If you prefer to arrange your set by selecting the precise diameters you can choose the single strings from the tables below, where the recommended diameters are shown. An increase in diameter corresponds to an increase in tension.

Else if you prefer to choose completely freely any diameter , we suggest you go to the summary page of “HV” and type “F” strings (in pure silver).

NOTE: These strings are NOT as ’set‘ available – please choose from single strings!

Pardessus Strings in lamb gut

Vibrating string length: 32.5 cmPitch: a‘ = 392 Hz

The usage of unsplit lamb gut, besides being closer to the historical reality of the string makers of the past, has also led to strings with unexpected superior acoustical and mechanical properties, as compared to those produced with gut strips.

The surface of the HU type strings has been smoothened only to the minimum necessary to ensure that the string is not false; the string is then slightly oiled. Standard length is 120 cm up to diameters of 1.90 mm. Starting from a diameter of 2.00 mm, the standard length changes to 180 mm only.

Pitch

Gut strings for viola da gamba Pardessus are to be used at the historical French pitch of a’=392 Hz.
They cannot be used with higher pitches (baroque a’=415 Hz; modern a’=440Hz) as the first string would work well beyond the breaking index of the material itself.

Tension

In the below tables, for each note the string in medium tension is shown first, followed by the string in high tension.

Choose which strings to install

If you prefer to arrange your set by selecting the precise diameters you can add the single strings from the tables below, where the recommended diameters are shown. An increase in diameter corresponds to an increase in tension.

To choose any diameter in complete freedom, we suggest you to refer to the summary pages for  Unsplit lamb gut “HU” strings and Close wound “FU” strings (pure silver winding on unsplit lamb gut cores)

FG synthetic strings set for Pardessus

Vibrating string length: 32.5 cm

The F-Red Series are the new synthetic strings for bowed instruments, developed by Aquila Corde Armoniche as a valid alternative to natural gut.

Eco-sustainable, stable in intonation and durable, the new F-Red Series are our answer to the needs of all students and musicians who have to face conditions where the use of gut becomes too demanding, such as

  • high temperature and humidity conditions, typical for example of some sub-tropical countries (e.g. South America and Africa);
  • high cost for the replacement of gut strings that students have to face when approaching the study of ancient music instruments.

The “tirata”

“Tirata” is a word used by the string makers of the great Italian tradition. It represents the correct length of string needed on each instrument, considering its full dimensions. We decided to reintroduce it in our vocabulary to specify the length of a single string, which will no longer be indicated in centimetres.
For example, a string that’s 120 cm long will correspond to 2 tirate on a violin, but only 1 tirata on a cello.

Notice: to avoid damages, do not cut the strings. In case you want to shorten them, first spread some quick glue around the point where you want to cut.

WARNING: Wound strings are made with round wire and not flat, as was done at the end of the nineteenth century
WARNING: The surface is not smooth, but slightly satin, due to a special covering. After about a week, the strings will spontaneously smooth out.

7 strings bass viol ‚Stradivarian‘ set

(inspired by wound string samples referred to Stradivari)

String length: 120 cm

This set is inspired by three Stradivari’s wound string found at the Violin Museum in Cremona. They consist of one demifile-type string and two close wound strings.

From the measurements we took on the specimens, it is probably the fifth, sixth and seventh string of a 7-string bass gamba. Examples of this type of setting can be found in 18th century French iconography.

Synthetic set FG for 7-string Bass

Vibrating string length: 70 cm

The F-Red Series are the new synthetic strings for bowed instruments, developed by Aquila Corde Armoniche as a valid alternative to natural gut

Eco-sustainable, stable in intonation and durable, the new F-Red Series are our answer to the needs of all students and musicians who have to face conditions where the use of gut becomes too demanding, such as

  • high temperature and humidity conditions, typical for example of some sub-tropical countries (e.g. South America and Africa);
  • high cost for the replacement of gut strings that students have to face when approaching the study of ancient music instruments.

Renaissance Bass strings in beef gut

Vibrating string length: 74 cm

Smooth gut strings with varnished surface. The varnish we used does not come as casualty but as the result of a careful selection to ensure perfect compatibility with the elasticity of the gut, a perfect contact with the hairs of your bow , maximum protection to mechanical wear, to crease and stability to humidity changes. These strings have a varnished surface in the range of diameters from .38 mm to 1.70 mm. Starting from a diameter of 1.90 mm, the strings are simply oiled. Starting from a diameter of 2.00 mm the standard length will be 180 cm only.

Tension

In the following tables, for each note it will be first displayed the string in medium tension, followed by the one in strong tension.

If you prefer to arrange your set by selecting the precise diameters you can add the single strings from the tables below, where the recommended diameters are shown. An increase in diameter corresponds to an increase in tension.

Renaissance Bass strings in lamb gut

Vibrating string length: 74 cm

The usage of unsplit lamb gut, besides being closer to the historical reality of the string makers of the past, has also led to strings with unexpected superior acoustical and mechanical properties, as compared to those produced with gut strips. The HU type strings have a surface that has been smoothened only the minimum needed to guarantee that the string is not false; the string is then slightly oiled.
Standard length is 120 cm up to diameters of 1.90 mm. Starting from a diameter of 2.00 mm, the standard length changes to 180 mm only.

Scegli tu quali corde installare

For the viola da gamba family, all Cordedrago types are available, including the demi-filée and the silver-wound on gut strings without interposed silk, according to the ancient technique. Since our produced strings are very soft and sonorous even if thick, it is possible to minimize the use of wound strings, as was customary in the 17th century until their introduction by Sainte Colombe in 1675.

(Silver wound strings currently are out of production)

Viola da gamba soprano

Proposed set for a viola da gamba soprano of cm. 38 of vibrant length:

  • the first string and the La are Ritorta di Salle,
  • the Mi is a Cantino di Napoli,
  • the Do a Cordone di Roma,
  • the Sol and the bass Re are Cordoni di Roma.

On the set there is a 10% discount, otherwise it is possible to choose types and gauges of strings as you like, for example the Re bass can be replaced by a Cordone Cordedrago or a Copper loaded.

Proposed set for a viola da gamba soprano of cm. 38 of vibrant length:
medium Ø: 56-73-94-116-160-210
strong Ø: 76-100-124-170-220

Viola da gamba tenore

Set proposed for a tenor viola da gamba of cm.56 of vibrant length:

  • the first string is a Ritorta di Salle,
  • the RE and LA are Cantini di Napoli,
  • the Fa a Cordoncino di Roma,
  • the Do a Cordone di Roma,
  • the Sol bass a Copper loaded (Appesantite in Rame).

On the set there is a 10% discount, otherwise you can choose types and gauges of strings as you like.

Set proposed for a tenor viola da gamba of cm.56 of vibrant length:
medium Ø: 60-76-100-128-180-270
strong Ø: 64-82-108-136-190-280

Renaissance Bass

For the Renaissance bass the following set is proposed:

  • the cantino is a Ritorta di Salle,
  • the La a Cantino di Napoli,
  • the Mi a Cordoncino di Roma,
  • the Do a Cordone di Roma,
  • the low Sol and Re a Cordone Cordedrago.

The set has a 10% discounted cost compared to a similar custom frame and refers to the calculation of string gauges at a vibrating length of cm.74.

However, it is possible to choose different types of strings and gauges at full price, for example by placing a Cantino di Napoli as first string (in which case we recommend lowering the string one tone when the instrument is not used) and instead of the Sol and Re Cordoni Cordedrago a Copper loaded string (Appesantite in Rame).

For the Renaissance bass the following set is proposed:
medium Ø: 73-91-120-150-220-280
strong Ø: 76-94-124-155-240-300

Baroque Bass

For the baroque bass viola da gamba the following set is proposed:

  • the cantino is a Ritorta di Salle,
  • the La a Cantino di Napoli,
  • the Mi a Cordoncino di Roma,
  • the Do a Cordone di Roma,
  • the Sol, Re and La bass are not included in the set because currently the production of silver wounded strings is suspended.

The set has a 10% discounted cost compared to a similar custom frame and refers to the calculation of string gauges at a vibrating length of cm.74.

However, it is possible to choose different types of strings and gauges at full price, for example by placing a Cantino di Napoli as first string (in which case we recommend lowering the string one tone when the instrument is not used)

Filate in Brass strings are being studied, according to Marais’s own suggestion:

For the baroque bass viola da gamba the following set is proposed:
medium Ø: 73-91-120-150
strong Ø: 76-94-124-155

Violone

For the setting up of the violone in Sol a set is proposed in which the two basses Do and Sol are missing because the Silver Wound are no longer in production, however you can select as supplementary strings, instead of wound, of the Copper loaded ‚Appesantite in Rame‘ or ‚Cordoni di Roma‘.

The set of strings proposed:

  • a Cantino di Napoli for the cantino,
  • a Cordoncino di Roma for the Re,
  • the Cordoni di Roma for the La and the Fa.

For the setting up of the violone in Re a set is proposed consisting only of a Cordoncini di Roma for the Re, of the Cordoni di Roma for the La and the Mi; and instead of the Silver wound for the lower strings, you can select as supplementary strings Cordoni di Roma or Copper loaded Appesantite in Rame.

Gutmann Music Strings

Gutmann Strings are made from the best Australian cattle gut.

The origin of the raw material is essential for the making of high quality musical gut-wire.

We found the Australian cow ideal as those cows life and diet creates the typical characteristics we need to produce a musical instrument string. This string needs to have a long life when the tension on the string is high and played by a bow or fingers, not always soft and gentle but with passion …
