„Style fantastique“ is the 2010 live album by the ensemble Le Concert Brisé, directed by William Dongois (cornetto), and the ensemble’s fourth recording for the Carpe Diem label.
The term Style fantastique refers to a 17th-century compositional and interpretative style characterized by a highly free form, elements of improvisation, and a highly dramatic approach.
The album features the six Sonate op. 3 for solo instrument and basso continuo by Giovanni Pandolfi-Mealli (1620 – c. 1669), printed in 1660 in Innsbruck, Austria. The individual pieces are named after musicians who worked alongside Pandolfi-Mealli at the Habsburg court in Innsbruck, such as Antonio Castello (Sonata „La Castella“). Although originally composed for the violin, William Dongois makes the music sound so effortless that it seems as though it was never intended for any instrument other than his own, once again demonstrating his complete mastery of the cornetto.
This recording features Le Concert Brisé in its smallest and most intimate setting to date: alongside William Dongois, Carsten Lohff plays harpsichord and organ, while Éric Bellocq performs on lute and theorbo. They provide the continuo part in the six sonatas and perform solo interludes featuring works by Johann-Jakob Froberger (1616–1667). The harpsichord used in the recording is a true treasure—an original 1632 Ruckers instrument from the collection of the Museum of Art and History in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
What sets this CD apart from all previous cornetto recordings is that it is a genuine live recording, captured under extraordinary circumstances. In October 2009, the ensemble performed three consecutive concerts at the Museum of Art and History in Neuchâtel. The best pieces from these three concerts, which featured varying programs, were carefully selected and compiled for this album. This setting fostered an extraordinary dynamism and spontaneity in the performance, with the audience acting as a catalyst for unpredictable musical moments and an authentic interpretation that would be difficult to achieve in a studio setting.

„Style fantastique“ ist das 2010 erschienene Live-Album des Ensembles Le Concert Brisé unter der Leitung von William Dongois (Kornett) und die vierte Aufnahme des Ensembles beim Label Carpe Diem.
Der Begriff Style fantastique bezieht sich auf einen Kompositions- und Interpretationsstil des 17. Jahrhunderts, der sich durch eine sehr freie Form, Elemente der Improvisation und eine hochdramatische Gestaltung auszeichnet.
Das Album enthält die sechs Sonaten op. 3 für Soloinstrument und Generalbass von Giovanni Pandolfi-Mealli (1620 – ca. 1669), gedruckt 1660 in Innsbruck, Österreich. Die einzelnen Stücke sind nach Musikern benannt, die gemeinsam mit Pandolfi-Mealli am habsburgischen Hof in Innsbruck tätig waren, so zum Beispiel Antonio Castello (Sonate „La Castella“).
Obwohl die Sonaten ursprünglich für die Violine komponiert wurden, lässt William Dongois die Musik mit einer Leichtigkeit erklingen, als wäre sie nie für ein anderes Instrument als sein eigenes erdacht worden – hier beweist er einmal mehr die vollständige Beherrschung seines Instruments.
Diese Aufnahme ist mit der bisher kleinsten, fast intimen Besetzung von Le Concert Brisé eingespielt: Neben William Dongois spielen Carsten Lohff an Cembalo und Orgel sowie Éric Bellocq an Laute und Theorbe. Sie übernehmen den Continuo-Part in den sechs Sonaten und spielen als Zwischenspiele Solostücke von Johann-Jakob Froberger (1616 – 1667). Das gespielte Cembalo ist dabei ein wahrer Schatz: ein originales Rückers-Instrument von 1632, das aus dem Inventar des Museums in Neuchatel (Schweiz) stammt.
Außerdem, und das unterscheidet die vorliegende CD von allen bisherigen Aufnahmen mit Cornetto, handelt es sich um eine echte Live-Aufnahme, die durch ganz besondere Umstände zustande kam: Im Oktober 2009 spielte das Ensemble drei aufeinanderfolgende Konzerte im Museum für Kunst und Geschichte in Neuchatel. Aus den Aufnahmen dieser drei Konzerte, die sich im Programm unterschieden, wurden die besten Stücke ausgewählt und auf diesem Album zusammengestellt. Dieser Rahmen brachte eine außergewöhnliche Dynamik und Spontaneität im Spiel hervor, wobei das Publikum zum Katalysator wurde, um unvorhersehbare musikalische Momente und eine sehr authentische Interpretation einzufangen, die in einem Studio nur schwer zu erreichen ist.
Style fantastique ist eine Einladung, ein zeitgemäßes und für manche neues Verständnis des Begriffs Stylus Fantasticus zu erleben – eine Erfahrung, die heute nur noch selten zu finden ist: der spontane Schöpfungsakt sowohl des Komponisten als auch des Interpreten. Musik, Interpretation und Klang bilden den Rahmen für eine Reise in die metaphysische Unermesslichkeit der Musik.
