Description / Beschreibung

This book focuses on the most recent advancements and research activities concerning Mafic Igneous Rocks across the globe. It features manuscripts from renowned scientists and experts in the field, who are actively working on understanding these significant geological formations. This book emphasizes the application of cutting-edge geochemical, and paleomagnetic methods to explore various aspects of Mafic Igneous Rocks including their sources, tectonic settings, paleomagnetism, emplacement mechanisms, and more.

This book is composed of twelve chapters focusing on Geochemistry and Paleomagnetic Studies of Mafic Igneous Rocks. It explores major, trace, and rare earth element geochemistry, magma genesis and evolution, mantle source characteristics, crust–mantle interactions, geodynamic implications, and the role of mafic magmatism in continental and oceanic environments. In addition, several chapters highlight the application of paleomagnetic techniques in reconstructing paleolatitudes, deciphering tectonic movements, understanding geomagnetic field behavior, and constraining the timing and evolution of large igneous provinces. Bridging the disciplines of geochemistry and paleomagnetism, this volume provides an integrated perspective on the processes governing the formation and evolution of mafic magmatic systems.

Contributors / Mitwirkende

Dr. Akhtar Rasool Mir is a Senior Assistant Professor at the Department of Geology, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, JK, India. He received Ph.D. from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, UP, India. His research specialization includes igneous petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and tectonics. He was awarded Smt. Ketharaju Venkata Subbamma-Sri. Subba Rao Medal” for the best contribution in the field of Geochemistry Applied to Mineral Resources in 2018 by Indian Society of Applied Geochemists (ISAG), Hyderabad. He has more than 30 research papers published in reputed earth science journals of the world such as Geoscience Frontiers, International Geology Review, Acta Geochemica, Geological Society of India, Himalayan Geology, etc. His research focuses particularly on the petrogenesis and geochemical evolution of mafic and felsic igneous rocks, mantle–crust interactions, magmatic processes, and their implications for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya and adjoining regions. He has undertaken research on a range of geological formations and magmatic provinces, with particular emphasis on the Panjal Traps, Ladakh Batholith, granitic plutons of Kashmir, and other Precambrian terrains (in particular Singhbhum craton). He is also actively involved in teaching, field-based geological studies, and the development of educational content in Earth Sciences. His research interests reflect a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the processes responsible for magmatism and the geological evolution of the Indian subcontinent and the Himalayan region.

Dr. A.V. Satya Kumar is presently working as Scientist-C at the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, TG, India. He obtained his Ph.D. from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam & CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, India. His research interests include Satellite Geodesy, Gravimetry, Planetary Geosciences, Remote Sensing, Structural Geology, Tectonics, Paleomagnetism, Rock Magnetism, and Magnetostratigraphy. He has been actively involved in research projects on Earth and the Moon, and has published more than 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Advances in Space Research, Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, Precambrian Research, Tectonics etc. He is the recipient of the Youngest Scientific Research Developer of the Decade Award (Rural Development) for the year 2023 award from ITAP, Raja Ratna Health Care and Educational Trust, Hyderabad in Earth Sciences, and Young Scientist Award 2021 by Telangana Academy of Sciences, Hyderabad.
