Words by Fred Pratt Green
This is a festal setting of a text written in 1972 by
Fred Pratt Green
(1903–2000), who was a Methodist minister and prolific hymn writer. It proclaims the power of music in celebration and worship, and urges us to sing and play together in praise. The style is influenced by jazz and gospel, using bold and straightforward melodies coupled with a spicy and rhythmic organ accompaniment. There is a prominent separate unison part, designed to be learned easily and sung by extra voices, such as children or a congregation. It can also be sung by members of the choir.
When in our music God is glorified
was commissioned by Llandaff Cathedral, in memory of Hilda Preece, and is dedicated to the
Pratt Green Trust
to mark its fortieth anniversary of supporting church music and the art and craft of hymnody.
