About the Project
John Dowland Alive is a long-term artistic project dedicated to one of the greatest composers of the English Renaissance. Conceived by soprano Maria Skiba and lutenist Frank Pschichholz, the project explores the complete world of John Dowland’s lute songs through historically informed performance, scholarly research and carefully produced recordings.
Rather than presenting Dowland’s songs as isolated masterpieces, the project approaches each of his songbooks as a coherent artistic cycle. Every collection is performed and recorded in its original order, allowing modern audiences to experience the dramatic and emotional narrative envisioned more than four centuries ago.
Working under the name The Schoole of Night, Maria Skiba and Frank Pschichholz combine musical excellence with a deep interest in the cultural, literary and historical background of Elizabethan England. Their performances illuminate not only Dowland’s music, but also the intellectual world that shaped it, bringing together music, poetry, philosophy and history in a unique artistic experience.
At the heart of the ensemble are Maria Skiba, internationally acclaimed for her expressive interpretations of early music, and Frank Pschichholz, whose artistic and musicological work has been devoted to John Dowland for more than three decades. Together they have created one of the most comprehensive and ambitious Dowland recording projects of our time.

Über das Projekt
Kaum ein Komponist verkörpert die Klangwelt der englischen Renaissance so eindrucksvoll wie John Dowland (1563–1626). Seine Lieder und Lautenwerke gehören zu den bedeutendsten Schöpfungen der europäischen Musikgeschichte – voller Melancholie, Poesie und emotionaler Tiefe.
Mit dem Projekt John Dowland Alive widmen sich die Sopranistin Maria Skiba und der Lautenist Frank Pschichholzseit vielen Jahren einer außergewöhnlichen künstlerischen Aufgabe: der vollständigen Erschließung und Einspielung von Dowlands Liedwerken. Ausgangspunkt ihrer Arbeit ist die Überzeugung, dass Dowlands Liederbücher nicht nur Sammlungen einzelner Stücke sind, sondern als dramaturgisch durchdachte Zyklen verstanden werden können. Deshalb werden die Werke vollständig und in ihrer ursprünglichen Reihenfolge aufgeführt und aufgenommen.
Unter dem Namen The Schoole of Night entstand ein Ensemble, das sich intensiv mit der Kultur des elisabethanischen England beschäftigt. Musik wird dabei nicht isoliert betrachtet, sondern im Zusammenhang mit Geschichte, Literatur, Politik und Philosophie ihrer Zeit. Die Konzerte und Aufnahmen eröffnen einen faszinierenden Blick auf die Welt John Dowlands und seiner Zeitgenossen und machen die geistigen Hintergründe dieser Musik unmittelbar erlebbar.
Zum Kern des Ensembles gehören Maria Skiba, deren ausdrucksstarke Sopranstimme international geschätzt wird, und Frank Pschichholz, einer der profilierten Lautenisten seiner Generation. Seit Jahrzehnten beschäftigt sich Frank Pschichholz wissenschaftlich und künstlerisch mit dem Werk John Dowlands und verbindet historische Quellenforschung mit lebendiger musikalischer Interpretation.
Den Höhepunkt dieses langjährigen Projekts bildet die vollständige Einspielung sämtlicher Liedsammlungen John Dowlands sowie von Robert Dowlands A Musicall Banquet. Mit ihrem Abschluss im Dowland-Gedenkjahr 2026 liegt erstmals eine geschlossene künstlerische Gesamtschau dieses einzigartigen Repertoires aus einer Hand vor.
John Dowland
John Dowland (1563–1626) was one of the greatest composers and lutenists of the English Renaissance. His songs and instrumental works are admired throughout the world for their extraordinary beauty, emotional depth and poetic expression. More than four centuries after they were written, masterpieces such as Flow my Tears, Come Again and In Darkness Let Me Dwell continue to inspire performers and audiences alike.
After centuries of relative obscurity, Dowland’s music experienced a remarkable revival during the twentieth century and today occupies a central place in the Early Music repertoire. Modern scholarship and historically informed performance continue to reveal new perspectives on his life and works.

Maria Skiba & Frank Pschichholz
Soprano Maria Skiba and lutenist Frank Pschichholz have been working together for many years, united by a shared passion for the music of the Renaissance and the Early Baroque. As the artistic core of The Schoole of Night, they have developed an international reputation for performances that combine historical awareness, scholarly research and expressive musical interpretation.
Their collaboration is particularly dedicated to the music of John Dowland, whose works they approach not only as individual masterpieces but as carefully conceived artistic cycles. This idea forms the foundation of their long-term project John Dowland Alive, an ambitious undertaking to perform and record Dowland’s complete collections of lute songs in their original order.
Maria Skiba is recognised for her expressive voice and her profound understanding of Renaissance and early Baroque repertoire. Her interpretations are distinguished by musical sensitivity, stylistic authenticity and an exceptional ability to communicate the intimate relationship between poetry and music.
Frank Pschichholz is one of today’s leading specialists in historical plucked instruments. Having studied with distinguished teachers including Nigel North and Stephen Stubbs, he has devoted more than three decades to the music of John Dowland and the English Renaissance. Alongside an active international concert career, he has taught at leading music institutions and combines artistic performance with musicological research.
Together, Maria Skiba and Frank Pschichholz seek to recreate the cultural world in which this music was born. Their concerts and recordings unite music, poetry, history and philosophy, offering audiences a deeper understanding of the artistic ideals of Elizabethan England.
