Contenuto e Descrizione: I am very grateful to Andrea Schiavina and Ut Orpheus Edizioni for their interest in my father’s unpublished works. I hope that these new pieces will pique the interest of guitarists the world over and contribute to an overview of the work of one of the guitar’s most prolific composers.
My thanks go to Brian Roberts, of Wayne State University, who has offered to oversee the technical and musical aspects concerned with presenting this music and to all the individual editors who have generously given of their time. Any mistakes in the transmission of their ideas are entirely mine.
The genesis of this piece is rather amusing. In 1958 the tune “Colorado Trail” was the subject of a composition competition in
Guitar Review
magazine. The tune had been selected by the poet and writer Carl Sandburg from his
The American Songbag
and the first prize was $200. Vladimir Bobri, the editor of
Guitar Review
, had urged my father to enter, but, after sketching the beginning of a couple of variations, he became extremely reluctant (not particularly liking the tune) and laid low, hoping he would be forgotten. In the end, he received a telegram from Bobri telling him that they were holding open the competition deadline and his entry was expected. The music was completed in three days and posted off. His entry won the first prize, 6/7 votes, with Segovia heading the judging committee.

Note biografiche: John Duarte
nacque il 2 ottobre 1919 a Sheffield, Inghilterra, e morì a Londra il 23 dicembre 2004. Era britannico al 100% nonostante il suo nome avesse sfumature portoghesi. Suo padre era scozzese e sua madre, nata a Filadelfia, Stati Uniti, era inglese!
Studiò alla Manchester Central High School (1931-35) e alla Facoltà di tecnologia dell’Università di Manchester (1936-40). Chimico professionista fino al 1969, abbandonò poi la chimica in favore della musica a tempo pieno. La sua unica formazione musicale formale furono le lezioni di chitarra jazz con Terence Usher (1934-36); per il resto fu un autodidatta. Le sue numerose amicizie con grandi artisti includono una di 39 anni con Andrés Segovia e una forzatamente più breve con Ida Presti, morta all’età di 42 anni.
Fu compositore di quasi 150 opere per chitarra e liuto (molte commissionate con fondi forniti dall’Arts Council of Great Britain e da altre fonti, ufficiali e private, sia nazionali che estere). Molti sono stati pubblicati e quasi la metà sono stati registrati su disco. Fu anche autore di moltissimi arrangiamenti (alcuni anche registrati) e opere didattiche.
Autore di innumerevoli articoli, fu collaboratore regolare di

, intervistatore e revisore di libri, musica, concerti e registrazioni per
Gramophone
,
Music Teacher
e
Classical Guitar
, e autore di numerose note di programmi e di circa 250 note di copertina per dischi e CD di vario genere, comprese quelle per la ristampa integrale delle registrazioni di Julian Bream per la RCA (28 compact disc).
Come insegnante preparò molti studenti a carriere di successo, e fu direttore della Cannington International Guitar Summer School and Festival (1974-93), direttore del corso del Bath International Guitar Festival (1994-95) e della Oatridge International Guitar Summer School and Festival (vicino a Edimburgo, Scozia). Operò come insegnante, docente e giudice in 29 paesi al di fuori del Regno Unito.
Alla Convention della Guitar Foundation of America nell’ottobre 1999 ricevette un premio alla carriera.
