Arranged by Frank James Staneck for violin and piano,
The Charterhouse Suite
draws on both the original set of six short pieces for piano, published by Stainer & Bell in 1921, and the version for string orchestra, issued in 1923 in the Polychordia String Library and prepared by the series editor James Brown in collaboration with the composer. The scoring for strings is the principal source for bowing and articulation of the violin part in this edition. Certain amplifications of textural detail and dynamics in the later version have also been incorporated here, as representing the composer’s final thoughts. There is no record of a first performance for the suite in either of its earlier versions. The name
The Charterhouse Suite
, a reference to the composer’s old school, was only adopted in the 1923 publication, though it is now the title by which the six movements are universally known.
