is an attempt to set forth in a clear and concise manner the principles of harmonic combination and progression, as exemplified in the works of the masters. The fact that many excellent books on Harmony already exist makes some detailed explanation of its aims and scope necessary. It has seemed to the author that most of the works in circulation on this important subject have either gone too far, or not far enough; that it to say, have either been elaborate theoretical treatises, quite beyond the requirements of the average student, or have been merely primers, with a more or less sketchy survey of the more important branches of the study.”
So wrote Stewart Macpherson in 1904. He then revised the book on two occasions, making
Practical Harmony
an essential book on the subject and which has, by popular demand, been reproduced in full in this facsimile edition.
