These three fantastic pieces started life as studies for specific techniques, but Ryan was not keen on the title ?study?, as he felt it often seems to stifle the imagination and perpetuate the myth that somehow technique is detached from music making. He prefers to think of an image which conveys the essence of the music, hence the titles: Rush, Metropolis, and Birds Flew Over The Spire.
