This is an early work by an English composer, who has a specialist interest in choral music. It is a spirited carol, celebrating the life of the Blessed Virgin.
While the melody in the verses is mostly limited to the range of a fifth, it always has purpose and direction. The refrain features stepwise movement in the sopranos. The carol contains a mix of clear, direct solo writing in the first two verses, contrasting with the homophonic scoring of the final verse. The harmony includes strong dissonances, although the sonority of this piece is bright overall.
The 15th-century words are suitable for the Annunciation. Therefore, performances are often arranged for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, as well as other Marian feast days.
