Mozart’s great C minor wind serenade is presented here in an Original Performing Edition, free from the ravages of 19th century editors. Prepared from the composer’s autograph manuscript, the score has been annotated with minor editing marks (clearly distinguished from the composer’s own) to aid performance, but is otherwise exactly as Mozart wrote it. The final page of the autograph score is not in Mozart’s hand and has a somewhat contentious final 3 chords where there is no 3rd in the chord, having a rather strident open 5th sound. This is most unlike Mozart and, indeed, in the string quintet version that Mozart produced in 1787 (K.406) the major chord is used. That’s the only version of the ending that we can definitely say is in Mozart’s hand so I took the opportunity to reconstruct these final bars using the notes from that string quintet version.
