Opera potpourris were a common genre in the 19th century. It was a guaranteed way for the touring instrumental soloists to charm their audiences by riding on the successes of famous singers.
Here is the cello concerto that Verdi almost composed for a cellist friend, containing most of the famous arias from his opera Rigoletto, which triumphantly premiered in Venice in 1851.
