Introduction by Carol Marsh
Antony L’Abbé’s
A New Collection of Dances
consists of 13 notated choreographies in the French noble style composed by an émigré dancing-master for performance at two London playhouses, Drury Lane and Lincoln’s Inn Fields, between about 1699 and 1722. L’Abbé’s dances are recorded in a form of notation invented in the late 17
th
century by Pierre Beauchamps which uses a track or floor pattern showing the path followed by each dancer.
