Description
John Dowland, Collected Lute Music, A New Edition, edited by Jan Burgers and John H. Robinson (The Lute Society, 2026)
This is a completely new edition of all known lute solos and duets by Dowland. It benefits from the research and discoveries of recent decades, which have added a considerable number of pieces to the accepted canon of Dowland’s works. The collection comprises 115 pieces—many of them presented in more than one version—including fantasias, pavans, galliards, allemandes, song tunes, and lighter pieces for the Renaissance lute. Some are short and straightforward, while others are more demanding.
Designed for lute players, the edition is presented entirely in tablature and features a clear, elegant layout with page turns kept to a minimum. Appendices include pieces of uncertain attribution as well as accompanying parts that can also be played as solo pieces. An extensive critical commentary provides concordances, textual variants, and a wealth of material suitable for programme notes. The complete edition comprises 343 pages.
