Homeward Light
is in many ways a reflection of friendship and admiration. It is the second of two Christmas songs written for Caroline Lenton-Ward and the choristers of St Stephen’s Church, South Dulwich, where my friend Oliver Lallemant is Director of Music, and where I spent many happy formative musical years. The text is by Gordon Giles, Canon Chancellor of Rochester Cathedral, a friend and collaborator whose theological profundity helps us craft carols of elegance. The text of this carol expresses the elation felt by children who, having witnessed the nativity, are journeying home with new hope in their hearts. I deliberately imagined a soaring melody that I would myself have enjoyed singing as a child; judging from the joyful response of their YouTube performance, the children of St Stephen’s choir enjoyed singing it too!
