We are Married
is an intimate vignette of true love. The composer sourced the text from letters between Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett; the words were therefore not only exchanged by a real couple truly in love, but also written by renowned poets expressing their strong feelings with beautiful eloquence. Their shared respect and a sense of their relationship being a ‘partnership of equals’ shines through these lines, making them relevant not only for the piece’s dedicatees, but also for any modern couple seeking a secular anthem to accompany a religious or civil marriage ceremony, or other occasion of mutual commitment.
