(1747), the second of Maurice Greene’s two operas, sets a libretto by John Hoadly. Probably written for performance at the Apollo Society, founded by Greene himself in 1733, this three-act opera, for four soloists and chorus, is a beautiful example of the English pastoral-masque genre, both musically and dramatically in the tradition of Handel’s Acis and Galatea.
