Polly of the Plain
is a joyful song from the 1750s and one of the finest examples of musical entertainment heard at the London Pleasure Gardens. Those of Vauxhall and Ranelagh were considered the grandest of their day, but at Marylebone, the best music was played. Provided by composers like Handel, Boyce, Arne, Hook and de Fesch, it was performed by musicians from the leading theatres in town.
